SummaryMany lives are connected and living beside us. Human life can also make life and our friends in the climate suffer. By becoming a friend of animals, nature, and the future, we can find ways to protect them together. Johansson believed that because future generations could neither participate in nor protest the decisions made now, the responsibility of the current generation must go beyond the promises made and received. What he cited as the archetype of responsibility is the parents' responsibility for a newborn child. Even if there is nothing to return, a newborn is cared for. Caring for a baby doll is a device that allows younger students to experience this through their bodies. The empty chair shows that they are not "absent," but "present together in invisibility."

I have been researching and teaching ecological transition education in elementary schools for 30 years. Based on Hans Jonas's ethics of responsibility, we create lessons that teach children about their responsibility to future generations and nature.
